Athlete's foot is uncomfortable and can limit us in many ways due to the shame of others seeing our feet.
A significant portion of the population has suffered or suffers from athlete's foot. This condition is not only uncomfortable and painful, but it also causes stigma in those who suffer from it because of the embarrassment it can cause, not only due to its appearance but also because of the bad odor it produces.
It is a fungus
Also known as “Tinea pedis,” it is an infection caused by dermatophyte fungi that feed on keratin. These fungi affect the folds of the toes, the sole, and the edges of the feet. It is called “athlete's foot” because athletes are more prone to getting it. Around 20% of individuals with this condition are asymptomatic carriers of the contagious fungus. The fungus spreads frequently through contaminated towels, clothes, and bed sheets.
Contagion occurs directly from person to person as well as from moist surfaces where the fungus can live for months (pools, bathrooms, showers, carpets, saunas, etc.). It is more common in men than women and can affect both adults and children.
Keeping the foot damp (e.g., from sweat) for prolonged periods and wearing closed shoes such as boots increases the risk of developing or prolonging the infection, as it creates a warm, moist, and dark environment that is ideal for the fungus.
This fungus can be treated with both oral and topical antibiotics. However, it is known that complete eradication via topical treatment is quite complex, as at least 65% of patients experience a recurrence of the disease within the next two years. On the other hand, the oral route is the most effective as it eliminates the fungus from the body.
Why use socks for athlete's foot?
One of the challenges in recovering from athlete's foot is wearing open footwear, which is not suitable for all situations. Additionally, this may expose a health problem that affects the appearance of the foot and is often uncomfortable. No one wants others to see their feet in that condition. Not to mention, athlete's foot often generates a very bad odor.
Socks for athlete's foot help control irritation due to their softness and manage excessive sweating, keeping the foot dry and preventing the moisture in which the fungus thrives. They also help control the bad odor by keeping the fungus under control. Additionally, they are comfortable and improve the feeling when walking while the foot recovers.
